Surnames: HOFFMAN BERTZ CLERMONT Source: GREENWOOD GLEANER (Greenwood, Wis.) 07/12/1923 Hoffman, John R. (13 JUN 1844 – 30 JUN 1923) The deceased, John R. Hoffman, was born June 13, 1844 in Kloton, Zurich, Switzerland. In 1851 he came to America with his parents and settled in the town of Stockbridge, where he lived until coming to Greenwood, Clark County, Wis. Her he went to farming and owned a farm on the 26 Road, 4 miles south of the city. Later he moved to Greenwood, where he resided until death. April 21, 1873, he was united in marriage to Anna Bertz of Fond du Lac, she dying Sept. 1, 1912. In 1914 he was again united in marriage to Mrs. May Clermont of Jefferson City, Mo. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, two daughters, one brother and two sisters. Deceased passed away on Saturday, June 30, 1923, at the ripe old age of 79 years and 17 days. During the Civil War he served as private in Co. E., 21st Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry. He was also a member of the John A. Eaton Post No. 218 of Greenwood. Those from away who were here to attend the funeral were Mr. Henry Hoffman of Stockbridge, Wis;, Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Walsh and family of Eau Claire, Wis.; Mr. Carl Winkler and son and grandson of Colby, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Thide of Colby, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Milton Clermont and son of Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. John Steiner of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Wm. Byrd and daughter of Du Quoin, Ill. The funeral was held from Zion Reformed Church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Vriesen officiating. The body was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery. |
