Herman Berger died at the hospital in Portage, Wis., where he resided, at 11:45 Friday night, Oct. 28, 1921. He had not been in good health for some time, but the immediate cause of his death was peritonitis.

Deceased was born at Ashippen, Dodge Co. in 1879. He grew to manhood there and came to Neillsville, Clark County, Wis. in 1901, taking a position in the W.J. Marsh store, where he remained till about 1914. He then went into business for himself, which he carried on till 1918, when, when he moved to Portage to take a position as manager in a large dry goods store in that city.

IN 1908 he was married in Neillsville to Miss Martha Runge, who with their eight children, survive him.

Mr. Berger was a man who secured and held the friendship of all who came in contact with him. He was uniformly kind, courteous, ready to do anything in his power to make for the comfort and convenience of those about him. His goodness of heart, his upright life, his sincere Christian character, marked him as a man who stood as a model in the community. His modest manner and somewhat retiring disposition made it possible for only those friends who knew him best to realize the fine and beautiful points of his character. The funeral was held Monday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Portage, Rev. Uffenbeck of that city officiating. The sermon in English was based on the text, “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth.” The large number of people of Portage and vicinity who attended the funeral indicated that deceased had in the few years of his residence there, won the love and esteem of many friends, as was his experience here. Burial took place in the Portage Cemetery. Those from Neillsville who attended the funeral were Misses Martha and Esther Berger, nieces of the deceased, who went to Portage Sunday, and Rev. Brandt, H. Bartell, F.P. Hemp, F. Viegutz, and Wm. Duge, who went by auto Monday.
