Bio: Mortimer, Jessie & Belle Davis
(excerpt from "The Centennial History of the York Center United Methodist Church, 1880 - 1980). JESSIE MORTIMER Jesse Mortimer married Belle Davis in 1902. She was the daughter of Jermiah and Mary (Davis) who lived northeast of the church where Hetzels now live. The Davises came from Ripon aiid settled first in the woods northeast of Sladeks. They had come from a settled area and Mrs. Davis at least missed the comforts of tne more settled life. Belle Mortimer was interested in the work of the church and at times played the organ. They had two children, Helen and Ellis, (B. 1917). Ellis had moved to California and married before entering World War 11. He was drowned in an accident at Needles, Calif. in 1942. Helen married Gilbert Lawrence and lived on the home place. She has served in many capacities in the church, especially as church treasurer and financial secretary over the years. After the death of Gilbert, she married William Sisson and they still reside in York Center. Helen worked for many years as a retail clerk and cashier in Granton and NeiUsville. She is now self-employed in direct to the customer retail selling. Grace Mortimer married Ernest Rowe and they had 3 girls. He died quite young. The daughters are Irma, Mrs. Everett Popper; Ila, Mrs. Leland Bandelow of Menomonie; and Fern Borde of Oregon. George Mortimer lived east of the church, For many years he was treasurer of the Sunday School and served as usher. On his 70th birthday a surprise party for him was held at Flossie Schmidtke's home with many of the church members in attendance. Ray Mortimer married Mariah Davis and they also lived in York Center until retiring and moving to Loyal. |
