Clarence B. Bennette, age 93, Marshfield, died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. Graveside services will be held in the Lakewood Cemetery in Lake City, Minn. Burial with military honors will be held at the cemetery.

Hansen Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Bennette was born May 24, 1912, in Ponca, Neb., the son Rivola and Linea (Nelson) Bennette. Following his education, Mr. Bennette entered the U.S. Army. He served from June 30, 1944, to April 30, 1967. He received the good conduct medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon and the American Theater Ribbon.

Following his 23-year military service career, Mr. Bennette worked for the Pebble Beach Corp., in Seaside, Calif., as security personnel. He later worked in that same capacity for Figi's in Marshfield.

On June 7, 1982, in Las Vegas, Nev., he married the former Lydia E. Johnson [Lydia’s maiden was Schmidt; she was a sister to my grandpa]. She preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 2004.

He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and Post 1866 Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his free time Mr. Bennette enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening.

Mr. Bennette is survived by one son, Clarence B. Bennette Jr., Fresno, Calif.; one stepson, Leon (Deborah) Johnson, Marshfield; two grandchildren, Eric (Andrea) Johnson and Brooke Johnson; and a great-grandson, Cashton. He is further survived by two nieces and a nephew.

His parents and three brothers, Gordon, David and Rivola, preceded Clarence in death.

*Lydia Schmidt Johnson Bennette was my great aunt.
