Pradt, Charlotte J. (8 JUN 1828 – 26 APR 1907)

On Friday morning at 9 o’clock, April 26th, 1907, Miss Charlotte J. Pradt died at her home, 901 Seventh St., after a brief illness. For some time she had been slightly trouble with her heart, though it was nothing which caused her or her relatives or friends any uneasiness. For one of her age she had been exceedingly strong and well, at all time being able to go about the city and to visit friends.

One week ago last Wednesday she attended a meeting of St. Martha’s Guild of St. John’s Church, of which she was a member; on Thursday she went down to the public library and while on her way home from there, fell and perhaps her illness hastened thereby. She was taken seriously ill on Friday and grew worse until the end came at the time above stated.

On the 8th day of June 1828, Miss Pradt was born in Battleboro, Vermont, her father being Dr. Noah Pradt, and she was the last one of a large family of children. She resided in the East until eighteen years of age, when she went south into Georgia, to live with her sister, Mrs. S.B. Boseman. She was there during the Civil War and was among those who experienced the trials and suffering’s incident to those time. When Sherman’s Army marched to the sea, it passed the Boseman home. A history of the Civil War, as viewed by one living in the very midst of its carnage and bloodshed, was written by her and is among her effects. She was a versatile writer and wrote much for the press, especially during the war time. Her education included music and to that she devoted a great deal of her life, becoming an instructor in early life. After her sister’s death, deceased went to Vicksburg, where she lived until she came here in 1891 to reside with her brother, Chas. Pradt. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Pradt passed away and since then she has resided at the old home. She was the possessor of a very cheerful disposition; kind and considerate, she was honored and beloved by all who knew her.

Her relatives here are ex-assistant U.S. Attorney General, L.A. Pradt, Washington, D.D.; Henry P. Pradt, Wausau, and Walter Pradt of Colby, Clark Co., Wis.

The funeral took place from the home at 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Rev. E.M. Thompson, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church, officiating.
