Huckstead, Hattie (5 April 1871 – 5 Nov. 1935)

Mrs. H. O. Huckstead one of the most useful and best loved women of this community, passed away early Tuesday morning, Nov. 5, at her home on Pleasant Ridge.

Her health had not been good for some time, but she had been able to attend to her usual duties. While visiting relatives at Black River Falls a short time ago, she became quite ill. She rallied sufficiently so that she could be brought home but continued to lose strength till the end came.

Hattie Reed, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Reed, was born at the old Reed homestead, where she died, April 5, 1871. As she grew up she attended the rural and Neillsville High Schools from which she graduated in June 1889.

Nov. 29, 1893, she was united in marriage to Herbert O. Huckstead. They settled on the hoem farm, where they lived till 1917, when Mr. Huckstead was appointed manager of the Farmer’s Elevator Co., Lumber Yard, they moved to Neillsville. In March 1933, Mr. Huckstead having resigned his position in the lumber yeard they moved back to the farm. Mr. Huckstead died Sept. 16, 1933, and since then Mrs. Huckstead has remained at the old home with her son Harold and family. She is survived by three children Dorothy, Mrs. Jesse Scott, Neillsville; Harold on the home farm and Miss Ruth Huckstead, a student at the University of Wisconsin. She leaves also give grandchildren.

Mrs. Huckstead was a woman who during all her life made her influence felt for the highest ideals and the best things in the community. In Sunday school and church, in the W. C. T. U., and Monday Progress Club and other organizations she worked quietly but efficiently for good things. For several years she was a member of the Neillsville library board and was a conscientious and helpful official. Her death is a loss that will be long felt by her family and a wide circle of friends.

Funeral services will be held at the home, at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon.
