Surname: Warner, Warden, Allen Thorpe Pioneer is Last Remaining War Veteran Thorpe, Feb. 2,- S. S. Warner, a pioneer resident of Thorpe, is the last remaining Civial War veteran in Clark County. He was born April 1,1846, at Theresa , Jefferson County, New York in an old log cabin on the banks of the Indian River. He was married to Miss Phebe J. Warden at Lafargeville, N. Y., October 20,1886, and she preceded him in death April 13 1930. He is the father of four daughters and one son. Mr. and Mrs. Warner migrated from Mauston, Juneau county, to Thorpe in a covered wagon drawn by a yoke of oxen, in 1874. They settled in the northwest corner of Clark County, in the community now known as Eidsvold, and which was then only a wilderness. Mr. Warner served with the Twentytieth New York Cavalry during the Civil War and is a member of Eagle post No.52, Grand Army of the Republic, at Eau Claire, of which only six members now survive. He is enjoying good health and his hobbies are traveling and writing. He has written articles relating incidents in the pinery days for papers in his vicinity, and with his daughter, Mrs. Susan Allen, he toured Texas during the winter of 1930, New York state in 1931 and in 1932 he spent the winter in Texas and South Dakota. NOTE - Last date mentioned is 1932-he died in 1938 so this would have appeared in one of the local papers sometime between there. I took it from clippings in grandmother Phoebe (Evenson) Purkis scrap book. *Thorpe is now spelled Thorp.
