(November 11, 1918 - August 20, 2006) Martin P. Kalina, age 87, of Merrillan, passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2006, at his home surrounded by family. Martin was born on November 11, 1918, to John and Anna (Mihul) Kalina in Clinton, IN. During his earlier years, Martin pulped with his father and also worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1942, Martin was drafted into the military and proudly served with the U. S. Army’s 821st Engineer Aviation Battalion in the Pacific until 1945. On May 20, 1950, Martin married Dorothy Subke in Dubuque, IA, and they had five wonderful children. Martin farmed in Neillsville for 13 years. In 1963 he began working as a mail route carrier. He retired in 1982. Martin was an outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also was an avid gardener and his annual corn feeds were greatly enjoyed by family and friends. He was a member of the Alma Center VFW Post 8494 and the Knights of Columbus Council 4697. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children, Brenda (Larry) Gates, of Eau Claire; Marty (Diane) Kalina Jr., of Alaska; Steve (Diane) Kalina, of Merrillan; Chris (Walt) Kalina, of Sun Prairie; and Barb (Jerry) Meacham, of Alma Center; nine grandchildren, Bobby Jo, Preston, Gwen, Kerry, Kally Jo, Aaron, Hannah, Logan and Stephanie; and four great-grand-children, Lilly, Sadie, Gabriel and Ryan. Also surviving are two sisters, Helen Augustine and Dora Strok, of Phillips; two brothers, Albert (Irene) Kalina, of Phillips; and Lawrence (Barbara) Kalina, of Menominie; besides many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; brothers, George, John, Louis and Joe; and by sisters, Mary Bryja and Anna Mack; and by an infant brother and sister. Funeral services for Martin will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2006, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Alma Center. Reverend Crescencio Sauren will officiate. Burial with military rites by the Alma Center VFW Post 8494 will take place in Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Neillsville. Friends may call at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus rosary service at 8 p.m. and may also call one hour prior to services at the church. Casket bearers will be: Preston Kalina, Kally Jo Kalina, Aaron Meacham, Logan Meacham, George Kalina Jr. and Donald Subke. Honorary bearers will be Jerry Cernick, Virgil Hill, Ed Schoen, Ted Janicki Sr. and Glenn Mack.
