--------- Cailiff, Susanah (18 SEP 1846 – 2 MAR 1929)

Mrs. S.L. Cailiff, who has been in failing health for the past year or more, died suddenly during the early morning hours last Saturday. The funeral was held at the F.M. Church Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, with M. Kretschmer in charge. Rev. Knaak preached the burial sermon, and interment was in Mentor Cemetery. Deceased was 82 years, 6 months and 14 days of age at the time of her death.

Susanah McSwain was a native of Dunville, Canada, born Sept 18, 1846. She came to Wisconsin with her parents when sixteen years of age, the family being among the earlier settlers of northern Jackson County. In the opening years of the Civil War, she was united in marriage with E.F. Cailiff. Her husband was with Gen. Grant’s army in the campaigns around Vicksburg, and was killed in action in the siege of that city. His remains are buried in Vicksburg National Cemetery.

She later married Mr. Duff, for whom she bore one son, Nelson Duff. Her home was in Iowa for eight years, and the son still resides in that state.

She afterwards returned to Wisconsin and married Edward Stockwell, who died in 1888. To this union were born three children. She has since resided in and near this community (Humbird, Clark Co., Wis.).

Surviving her are two sons, Nelson Duff, and Edward L. Stockwell of Anacortes, Wash.; and two daughters, Mrs. Edna G. Sichler of Minneapolis, and Mrs. John F. Baker of Milwaukee.
