(October 12, 1944) State’s Thanksgiving To Be Observed November 23

Governor Goodland said that in order to clear up any confusion which might exist, he would proclaim Thursday, Nov. 23, as Thanksgiving Day.

He said he had been informed that all but six states would observe Thanksgiving on that day. The others will celebrate it on Nov. 30.

In two states, Arkansas and Georgia, there is a chance that both dates will be recognized.

The differences started in 1939 when President Roosevelt, in an effort to provide a longer period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, move the date ahead on week. At that time many governors ignored the change and fixed the “traditional” date, the fourth or last Thursday in November, set originally by President Lincoln in 1864.

In 1941, however, a House joint resolution was approved by the President, fixing the future date as the fourth Thursday. On top of this, many states enacted laws concerning the holiday.

But what further complicated the picture this year was the fact that five rather than four, Thursdays fall during the month.

Abbotsford’s most intensive “man hunt” will open Thursday, Oct 19, when a trained crew of War Manpower Commission United States Employment Service recruiters, teamed with representatives of major plants, begin their drive to find workers to reduce the total manpower demand of the state “must” plants for 4,776 workers, including 2,000 workers for the Badger Ordinance Works.
