History: The Colby Phonograph (October 11, 1888)
Surname: BACH, FLAIG, HULL, LEHRMAN, SALTER Source: Tribune - Phonograph, Vol. 46, No 42, p 5, Wednesday, October 18, 2006 (Thursday, October 11, 1888) A pleasant and interesting trip for Colbyites to make is to drive out to Theo. Lehrman’s to see his canary birds. Mr. Lehrman has been a bird fancier for years, and in Milwaukee made that his business. He has been an extensive importer of German singers and has at present four singers, recently imported from that country. His residence is about 2 ½ miles Northwest from the village and there he has 250 handsome canary birds in one room. A portion of the room is partitioned off with a screen and in doing that part he has over 100 young singers. With our better half we visited Mr. Lehrman’s place and witnessed this novel sight. Mr. Lehrman takes great delight in showing his birds and in telling his mode of handling, which has proved successful. (Thursday, October 11, 1888) A fair for the benefit of the Catholic church, will be held at Colby Hall, October 30th and 31st. On the 30th there will be the usual display of articles for sale, and a tract of 80 acres of land, in the town of Hull, will be raffled to ticket holders. In the evening a concert will be given, in which, it is expected, that Bach’s Band, of Milwaukee, will take part. On the 31st a gold headed cane will be voted, by the people, to the most popular of the two chairman of the towns of Colby and Hull, R. B. Salter and Andres Flaig. In the evening there will be a social time of the young folks. (Thursday, October 11, 1888) A pleasant picnic was held in Kopp’s Grove, last Sunday, and as the day was an exceedingly fine one, the attendance was large.
