Phillips, Sylvester (Oct 1,1846 – Feb.28,1930)

Sylvester Phillips, one of a family of eight children, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Levi Phillips at Fort Wayne, Indiana, Oct 1,1846 and peacefully completed his earthly journey at his home in this village Feb 28,1930 aged 83 years 5 months.

The first twenty-five years of his life were spent under the old home roof where he administered to his parents in every helpful way.

About 1873 he moved to Crawford county, this state and there he met Miss Rhoda Crume to whom he was married on Nov 28,1875. To this union five children were born: William L., of Gull Lake, Sask.; Dan L., Of Pillager, Minn.; Leon S., Mrs. Cora B. Anderson, Mrs. Kittie L. Hein, all of Humbird; all of whom with the bereaved wife, survive.

In May, 1907, Mr. Phillips purchased the Rathbone farm, south of the village, where the family spent the next eight years.

In 1915 the farm was disposed of and a house in the village purchased which has since been the family residence.

In 1925 the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Phillips was appropriately observed.

Mr. Phillips is survived by three sisters, Mrs. C. Noble of Mt. Sterling and Mrs. A. L. Greenwood of Poneto, Ind.; and one brother, Levi, of Pilager, Minn.

Mr. Phillips was a man of kindly disposition; one whom it was both a privilege and pleasure to know. He was a kind and loving husband, a considerate devoted father and an excellent citizen. He was one who experienced joy in rendering assistance to others, giving always generously of his time and strength in helping his fellow men.

At the age of 29 years, Mr. Phillips united with the Methodist Episcopal church and throughout all of the remainder of his life was ever steadfast and loyal to his faith. He served as trustee of the church here for many years.

Funeral services were held at the church Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock and were attended by many old friends. Rev. E. A. Weaver preached the funeral sermon. Burial was in the Mentor Cemetery. Relatives from away in attendance at the services were John Crume of Westby and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Crume of Viroqua.
