Poppe, Sophia (Marriage – 9 Sept. 1939)

Globe Lutheran Church was the scene of a simple double-ring-ceremony Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock when Miss Sophia Poppe of West became the bride of LaVerne Johnson of Mount Horeb. They were united in marriage by the Rev. A. Schumann.

The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Charles Poppe of the town of Weston. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Phillips of Stoughton.

For the ceremony the bride chose an icicle blue marquisette dress, ankle-length with a corsage of white carnations and white accessories. She carried an arm bouquet of roses, larkspur and gladioli and a white silk handkerchief that had been her mother’s for 41 years.

The bride’s only attendant was her sister, Miss Henrietta Poppe, who wore a baby pink chiffon dress with a shoulder length veil held in place with a corsage of white carnations. She carried an arm bouquet of pink gladioli.

The groom was attired in a suit of navy blue and was attended by his brother; Sylvan Johnson, who was also attired in a dark suit.

The church was decorated with autumn flowers. The bridal car and the home were decorated with pink and blue crepe paper. Julius Hagedorn assisted as usher.

A reception followed the ceremony and a supper for 35 guests was served at the home of the bride. The table was decorated with a large wedding cake which was baked by Mrs. Richard Hagedorn. The waitresses were Mrs. Arnold Ebert and Miss Evelyn Hagedorn.

Out-of-town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Knutson and daughter, Beverly, Mr. and Mrs. Symore Gilbertson, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Anderson, Miss Nona Anderson, Mrs. Hannah Wilkenson, all of Mount Horeb, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Phillips of Stoughton and Mr. and Mrs. James Lee and son of Granton.

Mr. Johnson and his bride will make their home at Mount Horeb where he is engaged in farming.
