-----Dobes, Anna (7 Jan. 1860 – 2 Jan. 1940)

Mrs. Anna Dobes passed away at her home on the North Side Tuesday afternoon, January 2, 1940, after an illness of about two weeks, with a complication of ailments. Funeral services have been arranged for Friday, January 5, at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rev. J. A. Biegler to perform the rites. Interment will be made in the Catholic Cemetery in this city.

Mrs. Dobes was born January 7, 1860, in Bohemia, (later known as Czechoslovakia), her parents being James and Mary Fjala. Twenty years later she came to America and was married to Frank Dobes in Chicago. They made that city their home for a time, later moving to Jackson county, and in the fall of 1907 they came to Clark County and settled on a farm in the town of Levis, where the son, Frank, now resides. They worked hard to maintain their family and to lay aside something for their declining years which they accomplished admirably. After turning the farm over to their son, they purchased a comfortable home in Neillsville where Mr. Dobes died in 1927. Mrs. Dobes continued to live in the home until her death, carrying on in the most frugal fashion possible. She rented a portion of her home and planted a large garden as long as her health permitted. She was a good neighbor and was a faithful and devoted member of St. Mary’s church.

She was the mother of seven children, two of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are: Anna, Mrs. Anton Koran, Black River Falls; Christine, Mrs. Adolph Meier, Levis; Mathilda, Mrs. Carl Zschernitz, Neillsville; Julia, Mrs. Frank Wendl, North Judson, Indiana; and Frank Dobes, Levis. There are also 36 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

All of the children were with the mother during her last illness and all were present for the services.
