Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) – A Requiem High Mass was read Friday morning at 10 o’clock at Holy Family Catholic Church in Willard for William Arch, 25, Greenwood, who died Tuesday, May 7, 1946, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, of injuries suffered in a car accident early Sunday morning, May 5, 1 ˝ miles north of Greenwood.

Military rites were held at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, where interment was made. Members of the Wallis-Hinker American Legion Post of Greenwood attended the rites in a body, and the Rev. Raphael Stragisher officiated at the rites. Veterans served as active and honorary pallbearers.

William Matt Arch, son of Louis Arch and the late Elizabeth Wodanive Arch, was born in the Town of Eaton, near Greenwood, Aug. 19, 1920, and was educated in that vicinity.

On May 15, 1942, he was inducted into the armed forces and was given his basic training at Camp Shelby, Miss. In December 1943, he left witht eh 85th Division for overseas service, serving in the European Theater of Operations.

He suffered a shrapnel wound in the stomach and chest when the Germans concentrated a heavy artillery barrage on a hil and was place on a hospital ship, later returning to the United States for treatment at Stark General Hospital at Charleston, S.C. In April 1945 he was given his honorable discharge.

Surviving besides his father are two brothers, Frank of Greenwood and Ernest at home, and three sisters, Julia of Milwaukee and Elizabeth and Angeline at home.
