Hamm, John (1866? – 23 JUN 1937)

John Hamm of the town of Holway (Taylor Co., Wis.) was drowned in Trapper’s Creek, located six miles north and one mile east of Owen (Clark Co.), on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Hamm was 71 years of age and had been living with relatives. No funeral arrangements have been made at this time.

Mr. Hamm left the home of his brother, George, yesterday afternoon about two o’clock to go fishing. When he failed to return, George called Fred Matson to watch for him when he returned home at supper time. Mr. Matson failed to find him in any of his usual haunts and immediately began to search for him. He found his hat floating against the bank of the creek and immediately notified George Hamm, who summoned assistance.

Royalle Hamel began to dive for the body and found it face downward in six feet of water. The drowning was called accidental by Coroner Hartwig of Medford.

John Hamm died by accidental drowning in Trapper’s Creek, Taylor County, Wednesday, June 23, in the afternoon. He had gone there to fish. Mr. Hamm was buried June 25 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holway.

Mr. Hamm was born in Washington County, and from there moved with his parents, brothers and sister to Dorchester (Clark Co.) in the fall of 1881. In the spring his father took up a homestead of 160 acres in Taylor County, where he has made his home ever since.

When he was six years old he had a severe illness of brain fever from which he lost his hearing.

His parents preceded him in death, as did a sister, many years ago, a brother, Joe, 13, and Jake last February.

Mr. Hamm leaves to mourn his passing, George Hamm of Holway, Mrs. Enoch Hempfner of Withee, and Mrs. George Ackermann of Curtiss.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mrs. Albin Swanson, a niece, of Superior; Mrs. George Rhyner, a niece and her family, of Wausau; George Hamm, a nephew, and his family of Cadott; and Miss Margaret Wilhelmson of Superior.

Pallbearers were Paul Stasek, John Stasek, Ignatz Novak, Adolph Neibacher, Joseph Kowalewski and Mike Kowalewski.
