Gemmeke, George Jr. (6 JUN 1898 – 26 OCT 1944)

George Henry Gemmeke Jr., 46, died of self inflicted 410-gauge shotgun head wounds at about 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, 1944, at the farm home, 4 miles west of here (Greenwood, Clark Co., Wis.).

Rudolph Meinhardt, a neighbor, heard the shot and called Oscar Gemmeke, a brother, who lived with George and the two found the body in the deceased’s bedroom.

George H. Gemmeke, son of Henry Gemmeke and the late Mrs. Gemmeke, was born June 6, 1898 on the farm where he lived all his life.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Reformed Church. In 1920 he was married to Miss Marie Trotter, who passed away in 1928. To this union were born three children, two daughter, Viola and Geraldine and one son, Gerald, who is a Sergeant now serving in France. His mother passed away in 1929.

A year ago he was again married but was not living with his wife.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, two daughters, Mrs. Viola Klarich, Chicago and Mrs. Roger (Geraldine) Marios, now stationed at the Jennings Hospital at Ft. Harrison, Ind. Where she is serving as a Cadet Nurse, one son Sgt. Gerald Gemmeke now in France, two brothers, Edw. Reported missing in the South Pacific and Oscar at home, and one sister, Mrs. Alma Dachiler of Chicago, and his second wife.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 20th at 1:30 p.m. from the Schiller funeral Parlors and at 2:00 p.m. from the West Side Reformed Church. Rev. J. Klingsberger, pastor, officiating. He was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery.

The pallbearers were: Norbert Kuester, Oscar Wehrman, Simon Wehrman, Ed Abel, Wm. Marvin and Rudolph Meinhardt.
