Mrs. Harriet Clark Passes Away Sunday

Mrs. Harriet Clark passed away very suddenly Sunday at 1:00 a.m. at the Masonic Home at Dousman, Wis., where she had gone just six weeks ago to make her home.

Harriet Clark, born at Manawa, Waupaca County, June 2, 1868 to John Knap Hayward and wife, Rachel Amanda, was one of 11 children. At the age of four she came to Spencer with her parents, making their home in the old Hayward homestead, still standing a mile southeast of Spencer. Three of her brothers, Merton, of Park Falls, George of Spencer and Walker Hayward of Minneapolis and eight nephews and thirteen nieces survive, among whom is Laurence Driscoll of Spencer.

Harriet Clark was a teacher a number of years before her marriage and her teaching career began April 18, 1892 in the still primitive forest in a little log building at Gad, Marathon county and continued up to the fall of 1907, uninterrupted with the exception of time spent at Teachers Training college at Stevens Point and Oshkosh Normal, from which school she graduated in January, 1907. She taught in rural schools at Cole school, Manville and near Thorp, also at Spencer, Athens and Fifield.

She was married Nov. 27, 1907 to Dr. James H. Clark of Unity who passed away March 6, 1932. Mrs. Clark was the president of the Spencer Pioneer club since its organization in 1939; was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge at Marshfield and held the position of librarian of the village of Unity for a number of years; also a Unity correspondent for the Unity Register, Spencer Record and the Wausau Record-Herald. After leaving Unity due to failing health she made her home for a few months with her nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Driscoll until she went to Dousman.

The remains were brought to the Swarthout Funeral Home in Spencer from which place burial services were conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. by the Rev. J. A. Olson of Trinity Lutheran church at Unity. She was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the West Spencer cemetery. Pall bearers were Spence Graves, Harry Prehn, Harry Bodle, Glen Damon, Russell Andrews and John Orgish.
