Shatswell, Mr./Mrs. Fred G. (Golden – 1 Nov. 1939)

The fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Fred. G. Shatswell, brother of Chas. Shatswell of Houghtonburg, was celebrated at Kalama, Wash., the first of this month, the Grange of that city sponsoring one affair, and Mr. and Mrs. Shatswell holding open house for their friends for the other.

“Mr. and Mrs. Shatswell, in a brief letter in which they enclosed two newspaper clippings of the anniversary celebrations, state: “Mr. Shatswell and I were born in Wisconsin, he on the old Shatswell homestead, and I at Nettleton Corners, named after my grandfather, David Nettleton. We went to school in Houghtonburg; our first term Roda Steavens was our teacher. We have a warm place in our hearts for dear old Wisconsin, but love our western home. We enjoy our weekly paper very much, sent to us by our brother, Chas. Shatswell. We send greetings to all old friends and schoolmates.”

The newspaper account of the home celebration, reads, in part: “Fifty years of wedded life were celebrated by Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Shatswell at their Cloverdale home when they held open house for their many friends and relatives Sunday.”

“The Shatswells started school together. They were married in Jackson County, Wisconsin, in 1889, and came west ten years later. Kalama and Cloverdale has been their home for the past 25 years. They have two sons and three grandchildren. “

“A beautiful gold wedding cake was baked and decorated by their two granddaughters, Mrs. Jack Keigh and Mrs. Elmer McEwen of Longview. It stood it three tiers, encircled with tiny pink rosebuds and topped with white doves and a bride and groom.”

“The rooms were colorful with yellow chrysanthemums, marigolds and autumn leaves. Mrs. Paul and Mrs. Merle Shatswell presided at the refreshment table. About 60 friends and relatives were present.”

And at the Grange Hall in Kalama, following a regular session of the Grange a special program was given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Shatswell. It opened with a comic song and skit, a “Mock Wedding.” The master of the Grange read a letter of congratulations from the congressman of the district. A program of song, recitation, and talks followed, and then the happy couple were presented by the Grange with an electric cream colored crockery combination tea and coffee pot with a creamer and sugar set to match.
