Surnames: HUGILL COATES WILKINSON STEIN JOHNSON Source: THORP COURIER (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) 11/02/1933 Coates, Anna L. (12 FEB 1865 – 23 OCT 1933) Anna Laura Hugill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hugill, was born at Platteville, Wis., on Feb. 12, 1865 and departed this life at the home of her son, Henry Coates, Oct. 23, 1933, aged sixty-eight years, eight months and eleven days. Her early life was spent in LaFayette and Iowa counties. In 1885 she received a certificate to teach school, which she did in the state of Iowa for one year. The following year on May 16, 1886, she was united in marriage to Richard Coates. To this union were born, Thomas, who died in infancy, Richard and Henry of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), and Mrs. Ella Johnson of New Lisbon, Wis. For six years after their marriage the husband followed the occupation of mining. In 1892 a farm was bought in LaFayette County. They farmed here until the year 1904, when they sold their farm and moved to Clark County where they purchased 160 acres of land near Thorp, Wis. She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away April 6, 1906. Mrs. Coates remained on her farm until 1919, when she went to Thorp to live. Here she lived until about a year ago, when her health started to fail her. The past year she has been cared for by her immediate family. Mrs. Coates is also survived by two sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Thomas Wilkinson of Livingston; Mrs. Peter Stein of Milwaukee; Thomas of Bangor; William of Mifflin; George and Henry of Cobb. Among other relatives who mourn her departure are her nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church on Thursday, Rev. W. P. Powell officiating, interment following the services in the Reseburg Cemetery. The deceased has always been an active helper in the church. A Christian mother will be missed but her faith stood the test. She has found welcome. “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of the Lord.” |
