TWO MEN AND ONE BOY

Last Friday evening Sheriff Philpott, of Neillsville, and his deputy, C. C. Edwards, of Humbird, got into a little difficulty in front of the Blair House in this village, the history of which is as follows, as near as we can learn: J. R. Sturdevant, County Judge, had sentenced a boy from Humbird to the reformed school at Waukesha, and at the request of the mother of the boy, appointed C. C. Edwards, deputy sheriff, to convey him thither. Sheriff Philpott, hearing of the matter, made up his mind to earn those fees, and so took the train and came down to Merrillan, to intercept Edwards and the boy and take him himself.

On arriving, he found the parties he was looking after already on the ground awaiting the next train going south. Philpott demanded the prisoner and papers, but Edwards thought the check put on by his superior was rather more than the occasion called for and so refused to give the boy and papers into his superior’s hands. A few wrathy words were said by both parties and still they could not agree. Therefore Philpott served a written revocation of the appointment of Edwards as duty and proceeded to lead the boy off. Edwards now interfered and a little squabble ensued in which Philpott left it wouldn’t do to attempt force. In the meantime Edwards bethought him of a way to gain his end by strategy, so he pretended to have abandoned his idea of taking the boy to the school, but insisted on taking him home again, so he started back to Humbird, got as far as Wrightsville, waited fro the next train and proceeded on his way unmolested.

The Sheriff went back to Neillsville determined, no doubt, to never appoint another deputy that he could not handle. Merrillan Leader.
