Surnames: Marsh Source: Neillsville Times (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) Dec. 1882 [Date of newspaper is unknown; using the article’s date in the subject line.] Maple Works (18 Dec. 1882) Editors Times: The Advent people of our neighborhood ate making preparations for a Christmas tree at their church Monday evening. They are preparing exercises for the occasion and a good time in anticipated. They extend a general invitation. Now, boys, get out the roads for Chas. Cornelius owns the fastest driving team in the county. He succeeded in buying them at a Sheriff’s sale in Marshfield one day last week. He is now visiting his home at Glenbenlah. There will be a picnic dance given at Joe Marsh’s hall Christmas evening. Numbers will be sold to those who cannot conveniently contribute to the “grub pile,” for $1.25, including supper. The proceeds of which will go to the treasury of the Good Templar’s. All are invited, and a good time sure. When one of our boys seen with a blood shot eye, or a scab on his face, a lame thumb, or a crooked nose, and is asked the cause, if he have a truthful spell on he will say something about the boxing gloves at Cornelius’ Store, but if his shame happens to over balance his truthfulness, he will say he fell down and hurt his thumb; he accidentally run against something and hurt his face; he stuck a straw in his eye, his horse bit his nose and crooked it, etc. S.
