County Jail

On Monday there were seven prisoners in the county jail, all held for trail at the next term of court under charges as follows: Frank Houghtellin, embezzlement; George Morrison, horse stealing; Hugh Perkins, murder; Andrew Dahl, Mike Collins, Alex Sires, Tim Barratt, larceny. There has just been liberated three who were under sentence of police court for offenses as follows: Frank Ayers, disorderly; Frank Short, drunk and disorderly. They paid their fines and were liberated. Ayers paid fine for disorderly conduct, and appealed a prosecution against him for resisting officers. Since the first of January last there have been 31 prisoners committed to the county jail, and have kept it full to nearly its full capacity during that time. The Clark County Jail, although small, is one of the safest and most convenient in the state. The capacity of the jail proper is eight, which with the two cells in the sheriff’s residence makes a capacity of ten. The jail under the care of Wm. Woodward is as clean and well kept as any we have ever visited. All the floors are scrubbed every day and a bountiful supply of water enables the prisoners to keep every thing clean about their persons. Every inmate is obliged to take a bath once a week, and make complete change of clothing.
