News: Colby (2 Dec. 1882)
Surnames: Parkhill, Simms, White, Steitz ---Source: Neillsville Times (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) 2 Dec. 1884 Colby – 21 Nov. 1884 Dear Times: Now that the exciting season of politics and politicians is over with, and affairs are settling into their wonted activity, a few items from this town many fine space in your columns. Parties in town who bet on the election are transferring funds, hats, oysters, cigars, etc. We heard one man remark that if Cleveland were elected, he would eat his undergarment. On account of the cold spell now upon us, he will probably wait till sp ring before doing so, however. Geo. B. Parkhill, Thorp’s lawyer, was over to spend the day of rest in our burgh. He reported business at Thorp good. Prof. Simms and Miss White went to Unity to attend the teacher’s meeting. The Prof. is president and prime mover in the association. Owing to the election of a man who is unable to get a third grade certificate, to the office of County Superintendent of schools, in Marathon County, a little educational work is needed there. Last Thursday night the roller rink was well attended. Some of our young lady skaters are becoming experts. The business outlook of this vicinity does not promise much activity this winter. Owing to the low price of lumber, but few parties will put in camps. Farmers will have a chance to improve their farms, which will insure them better times in the future. Geo. Steitz is putting in the Russia bath, and will be able to relieve all cases of bone ache without failure in a few days. Everyone here seems to be satisfied with the new set of county officers. Most of them are men of known ability, and the ‘school-ma’m’ will be aboard throughout the county with the certainty of being well received everywhere. Knickerbocker |
