McCutcheon, Edith (1 NOV 1863 – 8 AUG 1936)

Mrs. Edith McCutcheon, wife of Dr. W.R. McCutcheon, suffered a stroke of apoplexy while engaged in writing a letter at her home here (Thorp, Clark Co., Wis.) on Friday evening, and passed away on Saturday morning without regaining consciousness. She had reached the age of 72 years, 9 months and 8 days.

Seldom has it been our duty to record so sudden a death. Active and apparently in good health, her passing spread a dark gloom over the whole community. Mrs. McCutcheon was an every day Christian. The beautifying influences of a pure religion were spread over a life as spotless and charming as was ever possessed by any of the noble women who have lived and died during the ages that are gone. As such a life was a blessing and benefaction to all within the sphere of its influence, so is death of such a one a public misfortune, as well as an irreparable loss to the home circle made desolate by her departure. Life will never be quite the same to those who knew quite the same to those who knew her, while those who were nearest to her will long for her with unutterable longings, long for a mother’s counsel and advice, and a wife’s gentle and loving sympathy. She was a a woman of strong Christian character; patient, loving and self-sacrificing.

Edith Ellen Fear was born near Augusta, Wis., on Nov. 1, 1863. Upon completing her schooling she took up teaching and taught in Thorp for some time before her marriage to Dr. W.R. McCutcheon on Oct. 1, 1885. Thorp has always been her home and she filled well the duties of a pioneer doctor’s helpmate, always finding time to lend a helpful hand and kindly counsel, in private as well as civic affairs.

Of her immediate family there remain her husband, Dr. W.R. McCutcheon, her two daughters, Susan and Anna and one brother, E.J. Fear.

Present at the funeral with Dr. McCutcheon were: her daughter Susan, (Mrs. E.F. Burns), Eau Claire, with her husband, Edw. F. Burns and their family, Edith Garrison Reynolds and her husband, Loran W. Reynolds, Susan Jane Burns, Judd A. Burns, Donald E. Burns and family, Robert W. Burns and family; her daughter Anna, Mrs. W.A. McEachern of Caspian, Mich., and her husband, Wm. A. McEachern, and their children, William E. McEachern, David R. McEachern, Susan Margaret McEachern; her brother, Edgar J. Fear of Eau Claire, and his family, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Fear, Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Hatch, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Goodrich, Durand, Mr. and Mrs. Adam J. Homes, St. Paul, Mrs. Celia Garrison, Mr. and Mrs. Orestes Garrison, Wis. Rapids.

Impressive funeral services were conducted by Rev. Norenberg of the Congregational Church of Eau Claire, at the Bogumill Funeral Home Monday afternoon, with sweet, solemn music by Mrs. F.H. Graham of Eau Claire. The remains were laid to rest in the East Thorp Cemetery.
