Matkovich, 84, formerly of Wittenberg and Willard, died Nov. 3, 1997, at ElderHaus in Stevens Point. Visitatation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. at Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home in Wittenberg and again from 11 a.m. until noon Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Willard. Graveside service and internment will follow at noon in the parish cemetery. The Rev. Joe Follmar will officiate. He was born April 29, 1913, in St. Louis County, Minn., the son of Martin and Theresa (Kocyan) Matkovich. He had been married to Sophie Plautz prior to marrying Gladys Trost who preceded him in death. He then married Gwen Geiger. As a young boy he moved with his parents to Willard where he worked on the family dairy farm. He then moved to West Allis and was employed at the Heil Co. in Milwaukee, Steen Welsing Co. in New Berlin, and then owned and operated his own welding business, West Side Welsing, until his retirement. He moved to Wittenberg in 1977. Martin enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting and gardening. Survivors include one daughter, Carol Cole of Madison; and two sisters, Ann Gnader of Dallas, Texas and Marie (Leonard) Rauen of Burlington; neices and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Matkovich, Louie Maykovich; his sister, Emelia Bertrand; and his parents. |
