Mathews, Emma (21 APR 1875 – 20 OCT 1936)

Word has been received of the recent death of Mrs. C.F. Mathews, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Oliver Martin, at Burlington last Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. She had been troubled with heart disease for the past six years and moved to Burlington a year ago to make her home with her daughter.

Emma Cordy was born at Stockbridge, April 21, 1875, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nicolas Cordy, and was 61 years, 6 months old at time of death. On Nov. 19, 1895 she married Charles F. Mathews, also of Stockbridge. They lived in that community until 1900 when they moved to northern Wisconsin. The Mathews family lived for several years on their farm three miles northwest of Dorchester (Clark Co., Wis.), and later moved to a farm one and one-half miles northeast of Abbotsford, where they lived until moving to southern Wisconsin about fifteen years ago.

Besides her husband, who was better known here as Frank Mathews, Mrs. Mathews is survived by one son, Harry, a teacher at the Racine High School, one daughter, Ida, Mrs. Oliver Martin, one grandson, and two granddaughters. She is also survived by four sisters and two brothers. She is also a cousin to R.W. Hugoboom.

Funeral services were held at the St. Charles Catholic Church at 9 o’clock Friday morning with the Rev. F.J. Hillenbrand officiating. The many Dorchester friends of the Mathews join in offering deepest sympathy to the family.
