Vol. 47, No. 37, Wed., Sept. 12, 2007, p. 10 Johnas, Mary Rose (1913 – 01 Sept. 2007) Mary Janke Johnas, 94, died Saturday, September 1st, 2007, at Mount view Care Center, Wausau, where she resided for the past two months. A burial service was held September 2nd at Calvary Cemetery in Athens. A memorial Mass was celebrated on September 8th at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Athens. The Rev. Charles Hiebl presided. Mary Rose Gresl was born in Cato, to Frank and Anna (Lemberger) Gresl. She spent most of her life in the Athens area. Mary and Herb Janke were married on June 17th, 1930. She was a homemaker and farmed with her husband Herb in the Town of Bern. In 1961, Mary and Herb moved to the village of Athens and she then worked as a nurse’s aide at the Medford Memorial Hospital for 10 years. He died February 2nd, 1979. On July 12th, 1980, Mary married Lawrence Johnas. Lawrence died April 13th, 1994. Mary graduated form the eighth grade at St. Anthony’s School and earned her GED at the age of 61. She enjoyed cooking, painting and traveling. Mary was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, P.C.C.W., The Ladies Auxiliary and W.W.D. Homemakers. She is survived by one son and four daughters; Russell (Charlene) Janke, Luella (Andrew) Schreiner, Marilyn (Delmar) Becker, Therese (Ray) Thuot and Joan (Joseph) Braun, all of Marathon County; brothers Louis (Carol) Gresl, John (Glendl) Gresl and Arthur (Phyllis) Gresl, all in the near Milwaukee area; sisters Dorothy (Rudy) Eckert, Goodrich, Irene (Carl) Dittrich, West Bend, and Laverne (Ed) Miller, FL; 24 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Besides her two husbands, Mary was preceded in death by two sons, James in 1990 and Jerome in 2003; two grandsons, one granddaughter; and four siblings, Robert, Lillian, Mary Ann Gresl and Bernice Endres. *** Note: Date of birth is not included in the printed obituary. |
