Broeren, Theodore (1 JUN 1867 – 30 DEC 1939)

Last rites were held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church for Theo. Broeren, an aged respected resident of this village (Thorp, Clark Co., Wis.), who passed away early Saturday at his home here. Services were conducted by Rev. A.M. Muckerheide at nine o’clock.

Mr. Broeren suffered a heart attack over one year ago from which he never fully recovered and had been confined to his home and limited activities during that period. He had reached the age of seventy-two years, five months and twenty-nine days.

Theodore Broeren was born in Hollandtown, Brown County, Wis., on June 1, 1867. At the age of twenty-five he moved to Portland, Oregon, and eight years later came to Thorp, making his home on a farm south of the village in the town of Reseburg. Here, he spent thirty years as one of the pioneers of this territory, clearing and building up the farm now occupied by his son, Robert. Mr. Broeren was well versed in the affairs of town and state and held the chairmanship of the town of Reseburg for a number of terms, besides being a member of the local school district board. He retired from farm work nine years ago and moved, with Mrs. Broeren, to the village, Here, within the circle of many friends, he spent the remainder of his reclining years.

He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father. He believed in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. His last words were expressive of peace in God and a willingness to depart and be at rest with Him.

Besides a devoted wife he leaves to mourn a family of ten children, seven sons, Ben of Bloomer, Theodore Jr. Of Medford, Frank, Robert and Herbert of Thorp, Elmer of Manlius, Ill., and Henry of Tiskilwa, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. Wm. Carney, Springfield, Mass., Mrs. J.S. Clancy, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Wm. Pagel of Thorp; two brothers, George of Hollandtown and William of Portland, Oregon; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Heiting, West Bend, Wis., Mrs. Barney Heiting, Dundas, Wis., and Mrs. John Schmidt, Thorp, and thirty-seven grandchildren.

The body was laid to rest in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, the following acting as pallbearers: L.P. Walsdorf, Ross G. Lawrence, John Hickman, John Grabon, Frank Schmidt and Wilfred Vanderhyden.
