Gierl, John (18 Apr. 1875 – 9 Sept. 1940)

John Gierl, age 65, a former resident of Abbotsford and Colby, died at four o’clock Monday afternoon at his home in Athens where he had been living the past seven years. Funeral services will be conducted this Thursday morning at nine o’clock at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Colby and burial will be made in the parish cemetery. Rev. L. J. Lang will officiate at the requiem high mass.

The deceased was not married and was born April 18, 1875, in Milwaukee. He had been employed at various times as lumberman, butcher, tavernkeeper and also as a railroad man at Park Falls for 17 years.

Eleven brothers and sisters survive and are Mrs. Charles Seaberry of Mellen, Robert Gierl of Abbotsford, Mrs. Ida Lukowicz, John, Killian, George and Ernest Gierl and Mrs. Hugo Dhein, all of Colby, Mrs. John Dietrich of Milwaukee, and Joe and Albert Gierl, both of Athens.

Funeral services for John Gierl, a former resident of Colby who died at Athens, were held at St. Mary’s Catholic church last Thursday morning, Rev. L. J. Lang officiating, and internment was made in the parish cemetery. The pall bearers, all members of the Germania Society, of which the deceased was a member, were C. Joe Kraus, August Schoelzel, E. A. Fleischauer, H. J. Wiedenhoeft, Ed. Dehne and William Young. Those in charge of the flowers were the Misses Jane Lukowicz, Helen Gierl, Rosemary Gierl and Jeanette Orth.

Among the out of town people here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Michael Chesick, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Stemer, John Hoffman, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Brickheimer, Louis Stremer, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gierl, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Gierl, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gierl and daughter, Rosemary, and son, Edward, Mrs. John Berghammer, Mrs. Charles Leyman and Mrs. Anna Schmitt, all of Athens, Mrs. Charles Seaberry of Mellen and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gierl and Mr. and Mrs. Morris Gierl of Abbotsford.
