Obit: Hinkes, Matt (1859 – 1940)
Surnames: Hinkes, Fuchsgruber, Staffney, Weix, Hoffmann, Weinberger, Hausberger ---Source: Colby Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) 09/19/1940 Hinkes, Matt (16 Jan. 1859 – 12 Sept. 1940) Matt Hinkes, a former resident of Colby, died at Milwaukee Thursday evening and funeral services were held Monday morning at a Catholic church in Milwaukee and internment was made in the Holy Cross cemetery in Milwaukee. Mr. Hinkes was born Jan. 16, 1859, at LeRoy where he was married to Miss Anna Fuchsgruber, Feb. 26th, 1880. In the fall of 1881, they moved onto a farm west of Colby and for a time lived one-half mile west of Colby where Mr. Hinkes was employed as teamster at the E. J. Thomas sawmill. Shortly afterwards he acquired a farm three and one-half miles west of Colby where Mr. Hinkes served as assessor for two years. In 1911 the couple moved to Colby where they resided until the death of Mrs. Hinkes on Feb. 2, 1939, when he went to Milwaukee to reside with his daughter, Mrs. Lydia Staffney. Mr. Hinkes was also employed by the Soo Line railroad for twenty years. Ever since their arrival in Colby, nearly sixty years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Hinkes had been active in Catholic activities. They were charter members of the first congregation formed in Colby fifty-five years ago and Mr. Hinkes had been a member of the church choir for fifty years. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Staffney, a son, L. M. Hinkes of Clinton, British Columbia, Canada, two brothers, John Hinkes of Appleton and Peter Hinkes of LeRoy, four sisters, Mrs. Joseph Weix of Colby, Mrs. Matt Hoffman and Mrs. Mary Weinberger of Wausau and Mrs. Ann Hausberger of LeRoy. Also five grand children.
