Rifenberg, Marie (Marriage – 19 Oct. 1940)

St. Leo’s Catholic church at Milwaukee was the scene of a colorful autumn wedding on Saturday, Oct. 19, when Marie Rifenberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Rifenberg and grand-daugher of the late Mathias Thorn, Sr., formerly of Colby, was united in marriage to Oliver Chartier, son of Mrs. Alexander Chartier of Milwaukee. For her dress the bride chose white slipper satin, fashioned with a sweetheart neckline, fitted bodice and full length train. The only jewelry worn by the bride was a three strand pearl necklace, the gift of her bridegroom. A long veil which billowed over her shimmering gown, was held in place with orange blossoms among a moss of lovely dark curls. She carried a large bouquet of baby mums and white roses tied with a huge bow of white satin ribbon, and approached the altar on the arm of her father.

The bride’s sister, Betty, who acted as maid of honor, wore a dress of tally rose taffeta with a band and large shadow bow of fuchsia velvet ribbon decorating the full flared skirt. The bridesmaids were Miss Mary Ann Brill of Colby, a cousin of the bride, who wore a dress of vivid teal-blue taffeta trimmed with penny-copper taffeta with teal-blue velvet trimming. All the dresses were fashioned alike in detail with sweet-heart neckline.

They each wore a tiny gold cross and chain, gifts from the bride, and carried taffeta muffs to match their dresses to which were fastened huge corsage bouquets of baby mums and tea roses.

Their cunning little hats were of velvet flowers and ribbons to match the dress trimming.

The groom was attended by his close friend, Frances Schick, as best man and George Sonntag, another friend, as usher.

Herman Glass, an uncle of the bride, and Orville Ultsberger, a cousin, ushered the guests to their places in the church. The out of town guests attending the wedding were Mrs. John Brill and Mrs. Wm. Harry of Colby.

After a bountiful dinner and reception at the Wauwatosa Women’s Club attended by about 300 friends and relatives of the bride and groom, the happy pair left by auto for an extended honeymoon to Mexico after which they will make their home in Milwaukee.
