Cody, Gorham E. (30 May 1880 – 9 Aug. 1941)

Gorham E. Cody died at the Marshfield hospital Saturday morning, Aug. 9, at 7:10, a heart ailment of two week’s duration being the cause of his death. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Lulloff Funeral Home, Rev. S. A. Schmiechen officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers, under Captain Roland Haire of Owen, were Frank Nienow of Wausau, Capt. Frank Cartwright of Wausau, Melvin Blake of Abbotsford, Neil Smith of Medford, Lloyd Prahl of Wausau and Jack Holte of Wausau, all police officers. Honorary bearers were Mayor C. R. Whitney, City Clerk Carl Holtzhausen, Alderman Charles Allmann, Clarence Wiedenhoeft, Vernon Loos, O. W. Sturner, Norman Marsh and R. W. Strathmann. Those in charge of the flowers were Syrena Sabler, Betty Steinwand, Rita Kriplean, Eileen Kobs, Marie Bauer, Marcella Franz, Delores Barr, Leona Rannow, Virginia Kriplean, Lorrain Loos, Theresa Caron and Virginia Firnstahl.

The deceased was born in Merrillan Junction, Jackson county, Wisconsin, on May 30, 1880, thus reaching the age of 61 years, 2 months and 10 days. He came to Colby in 1909 and was married to Anna Goetz in Dorchester on March 26, 1913. He served Colby as chief of police and also served as deputy sheriff of Clark county for many years. He was a member of the Colby Commercial Club and of the Wisconsin Policeman’s Association.

Surviving are his wife and four children – Corp. Robert G. Cody of Camp Livingston, La., Mrs. Pearl Hartwig of Mt. Prospect, Ill., Mae Cody of Milwaukee and Donald Coty at home. Also two cousins, Mrs. James Turner of Park Falls, Wis., and Sam Ellis of Boscobel, Wis.

The deceased was an active and energetic man, both mentally and physically, giving liberally of his time, labor and sympathy to his position as chief of police and highway commissioner. His convictions were honest and sincere, resulting from much careful study and analysis on his part. He lived a good Christian life and his friendly disposition will long be remembered by his family as well as by his many friends. The floral offerings surpassed in profusion and beauty anything ever seen here for many years which exemplified the esteem in which he was held.

Goetz, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Goetz, Mr. and Mrs. Verland Goetz, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hardrath, all of Riplinger, Mr. and Mrs. Al Sackett and sons of Rhinelander, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Marion of Duluth, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Richard Marion and daughter, Judith, of Duluth, George Cook of Unity and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Jensen of Spencer.
