Hrdy, Emma (24 Dec. 1877 – 7 Jan. 1943)

Mrs. Emanuela (Emma) Hrdy passed away at the home of her son, George Hrdy, 230 W. Seventh Street, Neillsville, at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 7th, 1943, of a heart ailment, having been in ill health for the past two years.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at the Schiller-Terhune Funeral Home, the Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating. Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.

Mrs. Hrdy was born to John and Amelia Novotny, Dec. 24, 1877, at Novy Dvory, Czechoslovakia. She was married to Charles Hrdy in 1895, the marriage taking place in Chotucia, Czechoslovakia. They were the parents of vie children: James, who died a year ago, and Mary, who passed away in 1906. Surviving are George and Charles Hrdy and Mrs. Emma Cram, Neillsville. She is survived also by a sister, who remained in her native country. A brother, who was chief forester in Czechoslovakia, preceded her in death.

Mr. and Mrs. Hrdy came to America on the liner Kaiser Wilhelm. Arriving in New York Dec. 16, 1900, they went directly to Chicago from there; Mr. Hrdy obtained work and his wife also working at the dress-making trade. They put forth years effort to lay aside something for the future, in due time being able to purchase a farm, in the town of Washburn, upon which Mrs. Hrdy lived for 35 years. Her helpmate passed away Feb. 35, 1920. With the help of her children, she continued to carry on the farm until the fall of 1941, when she came to Neillsville where she had since made her home with her sons.

The departed was possessed of a kindly nature, willing to assist wherever her services were needed, thus winning and retaining a host of friends. An interesting hobby with Mrs. Hrdy was that of writing articles for the Hlasatel, a Czechoslovakian newspaper, published in Chicago. This hobby gained for her many acquaintances from her home land, having received letters, from time to time, from people of her own nationality who reside in this country.
