Harmel, Arthur Fred (21 Apr. 1897 – 25 June 1942)

Funeral rites were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at St. Paul’s Lutheran church at Curtiss by the Rev. M. C. Goetsch for Arthur Fred Harmel, 45, Curtiss, who died at 4:35 a.m. at June 25 at Hines Veterans Hospital, Hines, Ill. Internment was made in the Norwegian cemetery, and the American Legion, Owen, had charge of the rites.

Mr. Harmel had been seriously ill for the past six months. He entered Minneapolis Veteran’s Hospital Jan. 8, after having been in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, for four days, and after three months was moved to Asbury Hospital, Minneapolis, to undergo two major operations.

He was transferred to Hines Veterans Hospital, Hines, Ill., to receive X-ray treatments, and was under the care of his sister, Miss Helen Harmel, R.N., of Rochester, Minn. His wife had been with him for the past three and a half months.

Pallbearers were Albert Klessig, Cornell Erickson, Grant Herrick, Arthur Thompson, Archie Ackerman and Frank Scheszik.

Mr. Harmel was born in Raymond, Minn., April 21, 1897, and was married at Winona, Minn., March 2, 1935, to Martha Gilbertson Smith. He received his education in Raymond rural school. He was baptized and confirmed in Raymond Lutheran church at Raymond.

After living on a farm in Minnesota with his parents for 21 years, Mr. Harmel enlisted in the U.S. army Oct. 23, 1918, and returned home May 10, 1922, moving to South Dakota with his parents at this time. Four years ago he came to Curtiss, and was last employed as a filling station attendant. He was a barber by trade.

At present he was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran church and the American Legion.

Surviving besides his wife are three step-children, Pvt. George Smith, Columbia Army Air Base, Columbia, S.C.; Miss Lavonne Smith, graduate nurse of Bartron Hospital, Watertown, S. Dak.; and Pvt. Cameron Smith, U.S. Army Air Corps, Sheppard Field, Texas. Twins, Harlow and Marlow Harmel, preceded him in death.

Also surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Harmel, Hazel, S. Dak.; two brothers, Adolph Harmel, Bryant, S. Dak.; and Victor Harmel, Watertown, S. Dak,; and three sisters, Mrs. Max Fuerstnau and Mrs. Harold Buskrud, both of Hazel, S. Dak, and Miss Helen Harmel, Rochester, Minn. Two brothers, Leo and Theophil Harmel, also preceded him in death.
