Pacholke, Bertha (18 Nov. 1860 – 2 Sept. 1942)

Funeral services for Mrs. Fred Pacholke, Sr., whose death was chronicled last week, were held Sunday afternoon at the First Evangelical and Reformed church in Colby, Rev. David Grether officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Sons acted as pall bearers and were John, Fred, Louis, Edward and Howard Pacholke and Louis Young. Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs. Wm. Schnabel, Mrs. August Schoelzel, Mrs. Louis Sachse, Mrs. Herbert Meyer, Mrs. Richard Wiegman, Mrs. John Pribnow, Mrs. Louis Boehm, Mrs. Anna Dessloch, Mrs. Wm. Schorer, Mrs. Robert Schorer and Mrs. Henry Ortmeier.

Mrs. Pacholke, whose maiden name was Bertha Golden, was born in Germany on Nov. 18, 1860. She was married to Fred Pacholke in Germany and came to the United States about 54 years ago and settled in Pennsylvania where they lived for 12 years. They then came to this community and settled on a wild tract of land south of Colby, which, by hard work and privations, they built into a fine farm. After this farm was cleared, they moved onto what is now the Paul Schmidt farm in the town of Hull. They discontinued farming 27 years ago and moved to the city of Colby. Mr. Pacholke died on Nov. 12, 1940, and Mrs. Pacholke died Sept. 2, 1942, at the age of 81 years, nine months and fourteen days, a heart ailment being the cause of her departure.

Surviving are eleven children – Mrs. Louis Young, Mrs. Otto Witte, Mrs. Amelia Amundson, Mrs. William C. Pacholke, Mrs. Charles Hanne and John Pacholke of Colby, Mrs. C. H. Thomas of Sheboygan, Fred Pacholke of Withee, Louis Pacholke of Abbotsford and Edward and Howard Pacholke of Eau Claire. Also 22 grand children and 16 great grand children.

The deceased was a good Christian and faithful member of the First Evangelical and Reformed church of Colby. Like all early pioneers, she was honest in all her dealings, of a congenial and hospitable disposition and well liked by all who knew her.

Pacholke and family and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Pacholke of Eau Claire, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pacholke and son, Allen, and Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Pacholke of Withee, Mr. and Mrs. John Hederer and daughter, Iris, and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wesling of Marshfield, Staff Sgt. Herbert Pacholke of Everett, Wash., Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Fults of Stetsonville, Mrs. Louis Pacholke, Mrs. Anna Evenson and George Greiser of Abbotsford, Gordon Bergstrom and Mrs. Andrew Bergstrom of Chicago and John Farenbach of Marshfield.
