Kleiber, Chester (13 Nov. 1913 – 3 Aug. 1945)

Chester Kleiber of Abbotsford, age 26, son of Mrs. Ida Kleiber, was drowned while fishing at Long Lake, near Tripoli, Friday evening at 8:00 P.M. The lake was dragged and the body was recovered at 10:30 A.M. Saturday.

Kleiber and Pfc. Norman Lindou, home on a 30-day furlough, were fishing in the same boat and had fly-lines out, and, when a fish struck one of the lines, Kleiber grabbed for the pole and capsized the boat. Lindou came up under the boat and worked himself around so that he managed to hang onto the boat. Mrs. Emil Dallenbach, who was in a boat with her son nearby, managed to get him out but was not able to save Kleiber.

Surviving Kleiber are his mother at Medford and two sisters, Mrs. Clarence Pries and Miss Marcella Kleiber.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Community Evangelical church at Medford, Rev. Paul Oweit officiating, and internment was made in the Medford cemetery.

Chester Kleiber was born in Medford on Nov. 13, 1913, and graduated from the Medford High School in 1937. He entered service in September, 1942, and received a medical discharge in June, 1943.

During the past year, he taught band in the Abbotsford school. He had become well known in this area when he was a member of Emil’s Band.
