~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ STANLEY REPUBLICAN dated March 8, 2001 100 YEARS AGO (March 9, 2001) L.K. Kerr of Eau Claire, one of the very oldest loggers on the Chippewa banked 200,000,000 feet of pine logs. He began logging in 1875 in the Phillips area. 70 YEARS AGO (March 6, 1931) Members of the Stanley band got together last week, L. Parish, C. Dodge, Mayor Gregorson, Sig Sneen, G. Sliter, Art Long and Howard Thorpe. Ole Aarness purchased a lunch counter business from George Drace. Stanley basketball team Cloverbest champs are Jack Long, Harold Heiting, Bobby Walsdorf, Roger Dimmock, Eugene VerWeyst, Gail Olson, Coach McKay, Gleen Husby, Phil LaBlanc, Frank Twaroski, Melvin Heiting, Alvin Mortenson and Bud Dvorak. 60 YEARS AGO (March 7, 1941) Mrs. Tom Foster’s pupils gave a recital Tuesday and they were Jeanne Baldeschwiler, Margaretha Skog, Virginia Lee, Shirley Soderberg, Mary Louise Lange, June LaFave, Mae Webert, Phyllis-Myhre, Allan Pirus and Mary Young. 50 YEARS AGO (March 8, 1951) Abner Krogan, age 61, was awarded $750 to cover damages resulting from pollution of the Wolf River by the city of Stanley. Hank Thorpe, trapper of beavers, broke his own record by bringing to town a 53-1/2 pound speciman. 40 YEARS AGO (March 9, 1961) Art Gaffney will be the new postmaster in Stanley. He will replace Imbert Roe who was acting postmaster since William Hanley retiring. Mr & Mrs John Young will sell their Stanley Coast-to-Coast store to Rodger Larson. 25 YEARS AGO (March 4, 1976) Paul Smith who had recently purchased Brown’s Trading Store from his grandfather Gilbert Brown, lost the store to fire. The home and garage were spared. John O Johnson, veteran shoe repairman, sold his repair shop and living quarters to James Stangl. Steve Duce placed 6th in the state wrestling tournament. 10 YEARS AGO (March 7, 1991) Meg Pierce joined the dental staff of Drs. Flaten and Hove, as a hygienist. Ryan Walker was named to the WCC Honorable Mention Basketball squad. Tanya Endru and Michelle Jankoski are working on their Girl Scout Gold awards which is the highest award in scouting.
