History: Local Tidbits (29 Aug 1873)
Source: Clark County Republican & Press Date: 8-29-1973 The dust lay about three inches thick upon the roads when the welcome rain of Tuesday morning came. We understand that Mr. W. H. Begley, and others will put on another stage like between this place and Greenwood. With two daily stage lines, Greenwood ought to be happy Rev. Mr. Hewett, of Girard, Kan., whose visit here we noticed last week, delivered a temperance lecture at the Court Hose, last Tuesday evening, at the request of his friends. The lecture was listened to by a full house. The speaker confined his remarks principally to the constitutionality of prohibitory laws, maintaining his points with forcible argument and illustrating them with pleasant anecdotes. Chandler & Brown have made some very marked improvements in their business in Greenwood. The main building has been considerably lengthened and a very neat post-office arranged in the back end. A Store house has been put up between the store and saloon, making it all one solid block. They have also added a tinshop to the establishment, which is furnished with all the machinery necessary in that line, if we are not much mistaken in appearances. Austin & Co. have been reconstructing their flouring mill at this place, adding to its capacity and improving it generally. The result is that they are making the best flour we have ever had the good fortune to use. If what we have recently used is a fair specimen of what they propose to make in future, the reputation of their mill will soon become second to none in the west.
