Selves, Neva (Marriage – 8 Oct. 1943)

Beautiful autumn leaves and branches of red berries were the decorations used at the Congregational church Friday evening, October 8, for the candlelight marriage service of Miss Neva Selves, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Selves, Neillsville, and Herman Porath, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Porath, Black River Falls. The sing ring service was used. Rev. George W. Longenecker, pastor of the church, was the officiating minister.

The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, was dressed in a white chiffon gown with long full sleeves and train. She wore a finger tip veil and carried a bouquet of white rosebuds.

The maid of honor, Miss Rosenburger, a friend of the bride, wore a gown of pink chiffon. She carried a bouquet of pink rosebuds and wore a wreath of matching flowers in her hair.

Ervin Schinck, a friend of the groom, was his best man. Usherettes were the Misses Avis Selves, Nelva Dahnert, and Marjorie Musil.

The bride’s mother chose a gown of soldier blue crepe and she had a corsage of rosebuds. The groom’s mother also wore a soldier blue crepe gown and a corsage of rosebuds.

Mrs. Allen Covell at the piano played as a prelude to the service, “Liebestraum” and “Love’s Greeting.” The wedding march was from Lohengrin, and the recessional, Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March,” both played by Mrs. Covell, who also played the piano accompaniment for two vocal numbers, “Because” and “I Love You Truly,” which were sung by Mrs. Helen Smith.

A 5 o’clock supper was served for the bridal party at the home of the bride’s parents. Following the wedding a reception for the immediate family and a few close friends was held at the home on South Court Street, the house being decorated with late garden flowers.

For her traveling dress, the bride wore a red crepe dress with matching accessories.

The bride is a graduate of the Neillsville High School and of Stout Institute. She taught last year at Alma Center. The groom is a graduate of the Black River Falls High School. He is now engaged in farming. After October 10, Mr. and Mrs. Porath will be at home to their friends on the groom’s farm on Route 4, Black River Falls.
