Pokallus, Emil Otto (15 Nov. 1885 – 31 Jan. 1953)

Emil Otto Pokallus died Saturday night at 11:00 o’clock at the Marshfield hospital where he had been recuperating from an operation. Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. O. Hoffmann officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were Paul Tesmer, Sam Yelke, George Sterzinger, Matt Allar, Lawrence Priem and August Nagel.

Mr. Pokallus was born in Colby on November 15, 1885, thus reaching the age of 67 years, two months and 16 days. He married Mary Engeldinger in Chicago on February 18, 1924. He was employed as fireman and brakeman by the Soo Line from 1910 to 1930 and then worked at the canning factory in Colby during all the years the factory was in operation. After that he was an agent for the W. E. Rawleigh company.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Tom (Bernice) Alioto of Milwaukee; a niece, Mrs. Ralph (Mary) Zettel of San Pedro, Calif.; one brother, Paul, of Colby; one sister, Mrs. Anna Wiedenhoeft, of Colby; four step-sisters, Mrs. August Nagel of Colby, Mrs. Lawrence Priem of Colby, Mrs. Eggert Lagerquist of Chicago and Mrs. Walter Kobs of Chicago; three step-brothers, Arthur and Albert Pokallus of Marshfield, and Henry Pokallus of the state of Washington; two grand sons.

The deceased was a church elder of Zion Lutheran church for 20 years and served on the finance committee for several years. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. It was the writer’s good fortune to have known him long and well, and we only knew him to esteem him more highly as the years passed by. He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father; to his friends the soul of fellowship. We too, will miss his kindly smile and friendly greeting.
