Grimes, Etta Mae Belle (20 Nov. 1876 – 29 July 1953)

Funeral services for Mrs. John J. Grimes, whose death was reported last week, were held Saturday afternoon at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby, Rev. Harvey Schall officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were A. X. Umhoefer, C. J. Kraus, N. L. Dessloch, A. M. Steinwand, Angus Lamont, Sr., and O. W. Sturner.

Mrs. Grimes, nee Etta Mae Belle Young, was born on November 20, 1876, at Barton, thus reaching the age of 76 years, eight months and nine days. She passed from her earthly home, after a long illness at Milwaukee on July 29.

She moved with her parents, Martha and Moses Young, to a farm south of Colby when very small and later into the city of Colby where she attended the city schools and taught in several schools in the surrounding community. On August 19, 1897, she married John J. Grimes. They owned and operated for many years, the mercantile store in Colby, now the A. F. Zillmer Co. store. They spent many happy and prosperous years together and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1947 at the Colby Methodist church.

She was a kindly woman, a hard worker and was always trying to help others. She was a former member of the Order of Royal Neighbors of Colby and the Women’s Relief Corps of Colby and Milwaukee.

Besides her husband, John, she leaves to mourn her departure a sister, Rena Peterson of Milan, Wash.; two brothers, Wallace Young of Bay View, Idaho, and Adelbert Young of Menasha, Wis.; several nieces and nephews and many friends. Her parents and a sister, Beulah Schulz, preceded her in death.

Out of town people here for the funeral were J. J. Grimes, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schulz and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Romanik of Milwaukee, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schulz and Howard Schulz of Oxford and Mr. and Mrs. Len Nickel of Unity.
