Pagel, Pearl (5 APR 1923 – 19 AUG 1943)

Pearl Pagel, 20 years of age, daughter of Mrs. Harriet Pagel, passed away at the St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield after a short illness, on Thursday morning, Aug. 19, 1943. This is the second death in the family within the past seventeen months, a brother, William, having died in March 1942. Her father passed away in 1935.

Pearl was born on April 5, 1923 in Reseburg (Clark Co., Wis.) and resided there until less than a year ago when the family came to live in the village. She graduated from the Thorp High School with the class of 1941 and for several months past had been employed at the cheese process plant of the Blue Moon Foods, Inc., here.

Her future was full of promise, and we dare not ask why she was taken from us in her prime, unless, as flowers are picked before the frost finds them, that we may not witness their decay. It is sad, indeed, to see one so well equipped for life taken so unexpectedly, yet for her there was no standing on the border land, gazing into the unknown, for death came as the sunset died along the hills when the day is over. A life that imparts such lessons is well worth living.

She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Harriet Pagel, one brother, Pvt. James Pagel of Kalamazoo, Mich., one sister, Mrs. Clarence Fisher of Thorp, and one half sister, Mrs. Edwin Steinborn of Milwaukee, and many sorrowing relatives and friends.

The body lay in state in the Thorp Funeral Home where Rosary service was held Sunday evening. The funeral was held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church at 9:00 o’clock Monday morning, Father A.M. Muckerheide officiating.

The floral offerings surpassed in profusion and beautify anything ever seen here before. A floral pall composed of many flowers was a gift of a few choice friends. On a card appended could appropriately have been place these words, “These flowers, so typical of life of her we mourn, mutely speak the pathos of a parting word, and are placed upon the casket by friends who loved the sweet sleeper. On these petals are tears for the parting, and hopes for the meeting beyond the gates.”

The body was laid to rest in St. Bernard’s Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Coates Jr., Fred Pagel, Theron Pagel, Stanley, Arciszweski, Steve Lato and Joe Meske.
