Groneveldt, Arnold (14 Mar. 1931 – 5 Aug. 1953)

Word has been received by relatives from Mr. and Mrs. Julius Groneveldt in Chicago that their son, Arnold, had been killed in Korea.

Twenty-two year old Arnold Gronevedlt was a former Unity boy and since moving to Chicago has spent his vacations here and is well known.

His parents had received a letter from him written August 4th stating that he and 9 other boys were going out on what he called truce land surveying. The parents received word from the Government Friday, August 14 stating that he had stepped on a land mine which was the cause of his death, August 5th.

He had written that now that they were no longer fighting, the points died not count as fast and that he probably would not get home until spring. He would have served his two years in May.

There has been a change of plans and the body of Arnold Groneveldt, who died in Korea will be shipped here instead of to California. The body is expected to arrive at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby about October 8th. Funeral arrangements will be made later.

Arnold Groneveldt was born in Unity March 14, 1931, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Groneveldt. At the age of 7 he moved with his parents to Chicago to live. Many of the week ends and vacations were spent with relatives in Unity.

He entered the Army May 13, 1952 and spent one week at Ft. Sheridan, one week in Camp Shaffie, Arkansas, from where he was sent to Ft. Sill, Arkansas for training. He left Ft. Sill November 17, 1952 and was sent to Korea for overseas duty. He was a member of the 235th Hdg. Bat. Field Artillery Observ. Battalion.

While surveying on truce territory August 5, 1953, he met his death by flying shrapnel caused by an exploding mine. The body was shipped home and arrived at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby on Tuesday morning accompanied by M. Sgt. Herbert E. Humphries of Oakland, Calif.

Arnold is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Groneveldt and a brother, Vernis of Chicago and two brothers Milton and Arthur of Los Angeles, Calif.

The funeral will be Saturday afternoon at 3:30 at the Unity Methodist Church with Rev. Schall officiating. Members of the Colby VFW Post will conduct military graveside rites.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. from the Unity Methodist Church for Arnold Groneveldt, 22, who died in Korea August 5, 1953. The Rev. Harvey Schall officiated and burial was made in the Unity cemetery.

Pallbearers were members of the American Legion Post at Unity.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Domer sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “The Lights of Home” accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Tom Loughead.

The Colby VFW conducted military rites at the grave.

Sgt. Herbert E. Humphries, Oakland, Calif.
