Groneveldt, Julius Henry (9 Oct. 1885 – 27 Mar. 1954)

Julius Groneveldt, 68, a retired Town of Brighton farmer who resided in Unity since last fall, after living in Chicago a number of years, was killed Saturday morning at about 10:45 o’clock when he was struck by an automobile on Highway 13 in the village.

He was said to have been standing on the west side of the highway when struck by a car being driven north by Tadeusz Pabiniak, 35, Rockford, Ill.

The Pabiniak car, the Marathon County traffic department reported, skidded on the snow covered highway into Groneveldt when the driver applied the brakes after he noticed the pedestrian.

A Colby physician was summoned to the scene and declared Groneveldt died shortly after being struck. He suffered a skull fracture and a fractured left arm and leg.

John W. Hildensperger, Marathon County coroner, impaneled a jury to make a preliminary hearing at the scene of the accident.

Mr. Groneveldt was born in Sheboygan October 9, 1885, where he received his education. He was married to Erma M. Sheldon at Unity, March 16, 1914. They lived in Unity until 1936 when they moved to Chicago.

They moved back to Unity late in November 1953, having lived here about 4 months.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Milton H., Los Angeles, Calif.; Arthur W., of Long Beach, Calif.; and Julius E., Chicago.

Three children and a brother died in infancy and the youngest son, Arnold, was killed August 5, 1953 when he stepped on a land mine while surveying on Truce Territory in Korea.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church last Wednesday afternoon for Julius Henry Groneveldt, 68, who was killed when struck by an auto March 27th. Rev. Harvey Schall officiated with burial in the Brighton cemetery.

At the services Mr. and Mrs. Ted Domer sang “My God and I,” and Mrs. Rodney Fuller sang “The Old Rugged Cross” accompanied by Mrs. Gladys Loughead.

Pallbearers were Orville and Bud Schultz, Clifford Binning, Harold Runge, Ray Binning, and Clarence Hebert.

Out of town persons here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Milton Groneveldt, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Julius Groneveldt and Dawn, Chicago; Mr. Arthur Groneveldt, Long Beach, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Sheldon, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Jones. Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Haynes, Mrs. Ruth Crotten, Cumberland; Mrs. Andrew Majestsky, William and Joan Crotteau, Hastings, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Steffens, and Mr. and Mrs. Untiedt, Curtiss.
