----Scholtz, Virginia R. (Marriage – 31 Jan. 1945)

St. Mary’s Catholic church, Neillsville, was the scene on Wednesday morning, January 31, 1945, of the marriage of Miss Virginia R. Scholtz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis E. Scholtz of Pleasant Ridge, and Matt J. Gassen, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Gassen, Sr., 401 E. Franklin St., Sparta, Wis. The Rev. J. A. Biegler, pastor of St. Mary’s church, performed the double ring service, at the 9 o’clock high mass.

The bride’s dress was of white, fashioned of net over satin, and made with a train and fitted bodice, with long sleeves. She wore a finger tip veil, and carried a bouquet of white roses. Miss Adeline Gassen of Sparta, sister of the groom, who attended as maid of honor, was attired in a pale pink, floor length dress. For her going-away outfit, the bride chose a blue velvet dress with black accessories.

The groom was attended by his cousin, Cpl. Donald Zwicker, of the U.S. Marine Corps, who is on furlough at his home in Richland Center.

A reception was held at Wagner’s party room, where breakfast was served to 30 guests, the tables being decorated in pink and white.

The bride was graduated from the Neillsville high school with the class of 1940, and attended State Teachers’ college one year. She also attended the Wausau Business Institute for five months, and for the past three years has been employed at the local War Price and Rationing office.

The groom is a graduate of the Elroy high school, and has served in the U.S. air corps, from which he was discharged in June, 1943. He is now engaged in the body fender and welding business, and plans to locate in Neillsville soon. After a brief wedding trip, the couple will reside in Neillsville. The bride plans to continue her work at the rationing office.

Out-of-town guests at the wedding included Mr. and Mrs. Matt J. Gassen, Sr., Miss Bobbette Gassen, sister of the groom, and Robert and Reggie Gassen, brothers of the groom, all of Sparta, and Mrs. Lillian Cottrill, Richland Center, the groom’s grandmother.
