Funeral services for Joe Kubat were held at 9:30 a.m., Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic church, Neillsville, the Rev. J. A. Biegler officiating. Mr. Kubat died at the Neillsville hospital Friday morning, Jan. 2, where he had been a patient for several weeks, his health having been poor over a long period of time.

Mr. Kubat was born in Czechoslovakia on Jan. 26, 1887, to John and Marie (Vanek) Kubat. He came to the America with his parents in 1870, coming directly to West Bend, where Joseph grew to young manhood.

In 1883 the family moved to the town of York, remaining a resident of Clark county the balance of his lifetime, with the exception of four or five years.

He was married to Paulina Grottke in 1894. three children were born to them; Mrs. Ella Davis, DeKalb, Ill., and Rosie and Leo, Chicago. Mrs. Kubat died a short time before their 25th wedding anniversary, which they were planning to celebrate on July 20, 1920. Mr. Kubat was again married to Mrs. Mary Lukas of Loyal, who had three children, namely Mrs. Josephine Cervenka, Elkhorn; Max, Neillsville, and Marie, Chicago, the latter being the wife of Leo Kubat.

Mr. Kubat learned the stone mason trade, which he carried on for many years. At times he made his trade a full time job and again he worked at it as a side line while farming.

After his first marriage he bought a farm in the town of York. Later the family lived for a time in Marshfield and New Lisbon, returning to York after his marriage to Mrs. Lukas. He also worked a farm in the town of Lynn. Always a conscientious, hard working man, he was forced to retire from the heavier work required in connection with his trade and farming operations, he and Mrs. Kubat moving to Neillsville in 1930. Not content with a life of ease, Mr. Kubat worked in the condensery and engaged such other work as he could find to do until his affliction became too severe.

The departed is survived by his wife, three children and three step-children and by the following brothers: Frank and John of Neillsville, Anthony of Portland, Ore., William of York and Ed of Kansas City, Mo. Two sisters, Sister M. Ludmilla, who died at the age of 33, and Marie, who passed away at the age of four, preceded him in death.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Kubat and daughter Beverly of Chicago, Ed Kubat of Kansas City and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bladl of Owen attended the rites.

The pallbearers were: Leslie Keuer, Otto Schlimme, Anton Schafer, Robert Prochazka Sr., John Krejci and Frank Simek. Interment was made in Neillsville cemetery.
