Obit: Hannamann, August (1848? – 1917)
Surnames: Hannamann, Schmirler, Eggebrecht ----Source: Colby Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) 11/08/1917 ----Hannamann, August (1848? – 31 Oct. 1917) August Hannamann, aged sixty-nine years, and his son, Gustav Hannamann, aged thirty-four years, lost their lives Wednesday night, Oct. 31, in a fire which destroyed the saloon of the latter on the Wausau road near the west border line of the town of Wien. The origin of the fire is unknown. August Hannamann was living with his son who was a bachelor, and they were alone in the building. About midnight, Ed. Eggebrecht, who was returning home from a party, discovered the fire. He summoned Charles Schmirler, who lives nearby, and they attempted to give aid. The entire building was a mass of flames, fire and smoke pouring from the windows and doors, and they were powerless to do anything, the building being burned to the ground. About five o’clock in the morning the flames had died down and the bodies of the two men were seen to be lying near the door of what had been the kitchen of the home, adjoining the bedroom. It is thought the fire had gained considerable headway before being discovered by either of the victims and that they were overcome by smoke while attempting to escape from the building. ----Source: Colby Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) 11/15/1917 The funeral of August Hannamann and son Gustave, who were burned to death on the night of Oct. 31st in the town of Wien, was held on Monday, Nov. 5th, at Edgar. George and Gottlieb Schulz of the town of Colby, relatives of the unfortunate men, attended the funeral. The boys also spent several days with relatives at Fenwood before returning home the latter part of the week.
