Mrs. Martha Alice McCune, 88, a former resident of this community, died Jan. 18, 1847, at her home in Richland Center. The body was brought to the Georgas Funeral Home in Neillsville (Clark Co., Wis.), where it lay in state until Monday morning, when it was removed to the farm home of a daughter, Mrs. Oscar Kuenkel. There the funeral services were held Monday afternoon, and burial took place in the town of Weston Cemetery. The Rev. Niebrugge, Presbyterian pastor from La Crosse, officiated. Pallbearers were John Seif, John Poppe, Ted Schwamb, Arthur Wegner, Paul Kuenkel and Frank Laken. Misses Betty Larson and Patricia Mattson sang, accompanied by Mrs. Jess Scott. Mrs. Scott, Miss Larson and Miss Mattson were the flower ladies.

Martha Alice North, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel L. North, was born on Dec. 4, 1858, in Toledo, Ohio. Her early life was spent in Ohio. On Jan. 18, 1881, she was married to Edward Payson McCune at Paris, Texas. She died on her sixty-sixth wedding anniversary. In 1911, the family moved to Clark County, and settled on a farm near Tioga. Mr. McCune died in 1918. For a few years she lived with her daughter near globe, and for the past twelve years has made her home with another daughter at Richland Center.

During the war of 1812, Caleb North, grandfather of Mrs. McCune, had charge of the ferry at Brandywine Creek, Pa., and was in government service transporting troops and also had charge of U. S. mail deliveries over the ferry. When Gov Todd called for volunteers to defend the state against threatened invasion, Mr. North, at the age of 75, was among the first to offer his services under Capt. Squires, and was sent to Cincinnati where he remained on picket duty until orders were given to return home. Gen. George Custer of Indian war fame was a cousin of Mrs. McCune.. Besides her husband and two children, her parents and all of her brothers and sisters are deceased. Surviving are seven children, three sons and two daughters: Arthur McCune, Peoria, Ill.; Harold McCune, La ?Crosse; Frank McCune Tooele, Utah; Edna, Mrs. James Stout, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Beulah, Mrs. Jess Pickett, Merrillan; Marie, Mrs. Oscar Kuenkel, Neillsville; and Mayme, Mrs. C. F. Baldwin, Richland Center. There are 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Out of town relatives who were here for the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. James Stout, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Picket, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Baldwin and family; Frank McCune, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McCune, Mr. and Mrs. Harold McCune, and Mr. and Mrs. Ulesich and daughter of Willard.
