Obit: Cohen, Jacob (1881 - 1946)

November 14, 1946 ---Cohen, Jacob (27 May 1881 – 7 November 1946) Jacob Cohen, for many years a well known resident of this community, died Thursday, November 7, (1946), in a hospital in Minneapolis, where he had gone for treatment and surgery. His death came suddenly and unexpectedly. Funeral services were held on Friday morning, and he was buried there beside his wife who preceded him in death on July 4, 1943. Mr. Cohen was a native of Russia. He wa s born there on May 27, 1881, and was at the time of his death 65 years of age. His early life was spent in Russia and in 1905 he came to America, coming directly to Neillsville to the home of his sister, Mrs. Harry Svirnoff. He later lived for a time in Chicago and moved to Milwaukee. There he was married on July 4, 1909, to Rose Offen. Mrs. Cohen died suddenly on their 34th wedding anniversary. Mr. Cohen was known as a good business man. He was engaged for a number of years as a dealer in junk, buying and selling waste paper, iron and other commodities. Many will remember him for his untiring activities in this work. While living in Chicago, he was engaged for a time in the mercantile business. In 1930 Mr. and Mrs. Cohen returned to Neillsville, where he has since resided. Surviving are two children, Miss Norma Cohen, who resides in Minneapolis, and Nathan, whose home is in Milwaukee. Nathan served in the U.S. army during the war. Three sisters also survive, Mrs. Harry Svirnoff of Neillsville, Mrs. M. Marcus of Minneapolis, and Mrs. B. Shapiro of Los Angeles, Cal. Mrs. Svirnoff had gone with him to Minneapolis and was there at the time of his death. Mrs. I. E. Svirnoff of Neillsville went to Minneapolis to attend the funeral services.
